Brazilian Backlands are one of my main life and research projects.

I got there for the first time in 2018, when I took part in the "The Backlands Trail": an eco-literary trekking journey through the north of Minas Gerais/Brazil. I lived for a few months in the rural area of Januária/MG and, in 2019, I landed in Canudos/BA – a place where an epic State massacre against a utopian community founded by a humble pilgrim happened in 1897.

I immersed myself in the culture and history of some traditional communities. From these experiences, texts, photos, drawings and good stories are still being born.

RESEARCH, TEXTS, REVISION AND GRAPHIC DESIGN (2022)

Consultancy made for Embrapa Semiarid and the Bem Diverso Program, from UNDP. Under publication.

I organize maps and interviews collected by Embrapa Semiarid with the Traditional Community Cachoeirinha/BA following a collective methodology. The idea is to narrate the history and way of life of this community and its territory according their own words.

INTERVIEWS, TEXT, PHOTOS, PROOFREADING AND GRAPHIC DESIGN (2021)

Consultancy made for Embrapa Semiarid and the Bem Diverso Program, from UNDP. Under publication.

I interview nine residents of a traditional community in Uauá/BA and transcribe them into texts about their way of life and local history. I photograph the interviewees and layout the material, which contains maps about their use of the land.

"My Paths are Opened: Daily-tales about my first season in the Caatinga Backlands" is the story I have been between March and December 2019, when I ventured through the interiors of myself and Bahia/Brasil. The gathering of these memories turned into an e-book full of photos and accompanied by a 6-episode podcast, audiobook style, with an original soundtrack by Igor Visentin and sounds captured directly in the backlands.

RESEARCH, TEXT AND GRAPHIC DESIGN (2019)

About the War of Canudos, one of Brazil's biggest massacres. It happened in 1897, when the new-born Brazilian Republic destroyed an utopian and humble community founded by a Christian pilgrim. This is a text that I distributed in throughout my personal pilgrimage in this territory. It sprouted during my first months there, between conversations, studies and observations.

Analog photos taken with a Praktica MTL3 during one my first season in Fabião, a traditional community in the rural area of Januária/Brazil. Fabião is the gateway to the Peruaçu Caves National Park, which brings together an impressive collection of rock paintings and caves in Brazil's Backlands.
